Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP?
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) describes the dynamics between our mind (neuro), our language (linguistic) and how the interplay affects our body and behaviour (programming). NLP is the study of our neurology and how the mind directs us, the impact of our verbal and non-verbal language and how we consciously and subconsciously programme ourselves based on the interplay. It gives us an understanding of the interaction of our emotions, conscious and sub-conscious, physical body and language patterns all of which interact to govern our thinking and behaviour. NLP contains techniques to allow us to change our patterns of behaviour, capability, beliefs and outcomes.
It is a very artful and insightful way of discovering who we are, what we do, why we do it and how to safely change it if we want to move to get better outcomes.
NLP has a strong focus on ‘modelling’ successful ways of doing things and learning the model so that we can bring about exceptionally fast and sustainable learnings.
How is NLP used?
NLP works on process, form, pattern and structure rather than content. It is based on tenets such as:
Every behaviour has a positive intent and is geared to towards adaptation
People make the best choice available to them at any given moment as everything we do makes sense in the
moment we do it.
People are not their behaviour.
For things to change, first I must change.
If you always do what you have always done, then you will always get what you have always got.
If what you are doing is not working, do something else.
If it is possible in the world it is possible for me. It is only a question of how.
The Law of Requisite Variety applies so in all interactions among people, the person with the most flexibility and
variation in behaviour can control the outcome of the interaction.
